Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.) formed in 1993 and consisted of Esbjörn Svensson on piano, Dan Berglund on double bass, and Magnus Öström on drums. Esbjörn was awarded Swedish Jazz Musician of the Year in 1995 and 1996 and Songwriter of the Year in 1998. “Winter in Venice” was awarded the Swedish Grammy in 1997.

“Strange Place For Snow” won the following awards – Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (from the German Phonoacademy), the German Jazz Award, Choc de l’année (Jazzman, France), the Victoire du Jazz – the French Grammy – as best international act and the Revelation of the Festival award, a special award from Midem. e.s.t. was awarded the Hans Koller prize as European Artist of the Year in December 2004.

Tragically Esbjörn died in a scuba diving accident in Stockholm in 2008 aged 44.

A chance visit to Dynamic Sound studio with John Holt inspired  Joseph “Joe Joe” Hoo-kim to build Channel One Studio. It took 6 months to build and was housed in the Hoo-kim family’s two storey premises at 29 Maxfield Avenue. It opened for business in 1972 as a 4 track studio with the offer of free “try before you buy” sessions.

Between 1974 and 1984 the sound of Channel One dominated reggae and the studio’s house band was The Revolutionaries.

Born Bernard Rich on 30 September 1917 in Manhattan. His father noticed that he could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one and by the time he was 18 months old he was playing drums in vaudeville billed as “Traps the Drum Wonder”. He was a bandleader by the time he was 11 years old.

Weather Report was a jazz fusion band co-led by keyboard player Joe Zawinul and the saxophonist Wayne Shorter. “Black Market” was recorded in December 1975 and released in April 1976 on Columbia Records and won the album of the year award from Down Beat magazine.

ZZ Top were formed in Houston, Texas in 1969 and the original line-up consisted of Billy Gibbons on guitar and lead vocals, Lanier Greig on organ and Dan Mitchell on drums.

Greig was initially replaced by bassist Billy Ethridge and Mitchell was replaced by Frank Beard. Dusty Hill replaced Ethridge when the latter was unwilling to sign a recording contract.

Born Lloyd James in 1947 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He started his own sound system after earning money from building amplifiers and repairing electrical equipment.

After working in Canada for a few years he returned to Jamaica and set up his own studio.  He then joined King Tubby’s team when Phillip Smart moved to New York City. By the late 70’s he was releasing his own productions, which included Black Uhuru’s debut album – “Love Crisis”.

His biggest hit came in 1985 with Wayne Smith’s “Under Me Sleng Teng” – a song that’s entirely-digital rhythm revolutionised reggae. He still works as a producer today, but is now known as King Jammy.
